Empty Bowls Event
Each February St. Stephens High School art students and teachers participate in the Empty Bowls Project, an international effort to fight hunger.
The idea originated with an art teacher, currently living in Asheville, who wanted to educate her students concerning hunger in our world. Her students started the first Empty Bowls Project and the efforts have spread throughout the United States. Many organizations sponsor an event and use the donations from the event to help alleviate hunger in their communities.
The Empty Bowls idea is simple. For a donation of $15, participants can select a bowl from hundreds made by dedicated pottery students and their instructor, Becki Henderson-Gow. Guests enjoy a meal of soup donated by local restaurants and bread and desserts created by SSHS Culinary Arts students under the supervision of Myra Johansen. The
evening entertainment features music by chorus students under the direction of Jennifer Hoffman. At the end of the evening, participants will leave with their empty bowl as a reminder of all who are hungry in Catawba County.
The event will be held on Saturday, February 26 from 5-7 PM at St Stephens High in the school cafeteria. Tickets can be purchased beginning in February by calling St Stephens High School 828-256-9841 ext. 402.
All proceeds will be donated to The Hickory Soup Kitchen and The Corner Table in Newton.
